Abstract
Study Design: Clinical research

Objectives: Tensiomyography(TMG) has been reported as a reliable and non-invasive method to evaluate the functional capacity of certain muscle. This study was designed to quantitatively evaluate changes in muscle function due to aging using TMG.

Summary of Literature Review: TMG is a useful measurement method of evaluation in the area of sports science research and sports medicine research. Among the five parameters [contraction time(Tc), delay time(Td), sustain time(Ts), relaxation time(Tr), maximal displacement(Dm)] by TMG, Dm has a high correlation with stiffness, and it is reported that as Dm decreases, stiffness increases. Bae reported evaluation of the skeletal muscular injury through inter-correlation between TMG(Dm) and MRI. In addition, Tc has a high correlation with type I muscle fibre, and Vc means contraction velocity and is introduced as a parameter related to training.

Materials and Methods: The subjects of this study were 42 young male athletes and 16 elderly women. As TMG, we examined and compared the thigh muscles of athletes and the elderly. TMG is measured by placing 2 electrodes on each side of the muscle belly and a sensor on the muscular belly and then electrically stimulating and then recording the muscular displacement. We focused on maximal displacement(Dm), contraction time(Tc) and contraction velocity(Vc), which are reported to be more important parameters than others.

Results: Tc was significantly higher in vastus medialis(VM) of elderly women than young athletes. Dm lower in biceps femoris(BF), vastus lateralis(VL), vastus medialis(VM) and rectus femoris(RF) of elderly women than young athletes. Vc was also lower in BF, VL, VM and RF of elerly women than young athletes.

Conclusions: TMG has the advantages of non-invasive muscle selection and ease of movement. It is expected to be suitable for evaluation of muscle damage caused by sports injuries or sarcopenia because it can be easily applied in clinical or sports field.
